WORD Christchurch KidsFest
Travelling south! I have a huge soft spot for Christchurch, one of the world’s great Antarctic gateway cities. With its strong links to Antarctica and its proud history of supporting and provisioning the expeditions of the heroic age, Christchurch always offers a warm welcome to a writer of polar tales. It was a real privilege to be invited to take part in WORD Christchurch’s magnificent KidsFest in July. What a pleasure to share ‘Amundsen’s Way’ at Turanga, the city’s fabulous new knowledge hub overlooking Cathedral Square. Working with a group of talented teens on their narrative skills during my ‘Writing the Past’ workshop was pure bliss. Huge thank you to Rachael King, Marianne Hargreaves and Magdalena for having me, the New Zealand Book Council for supporting this wonderful initiative, and Kit from Scorpio Books for providing a generous supply of books on the day!
