Auckland Readers and Writers Festival 2019
It was a real privilege to share the story of Roald Amundsen’s journey to the South Pole with over 2000 students from all over New Zealand’s North Island at the Auckland Readers and Writers Festival. With a life-size stuffed sledge dog, pigeons, pancakes, penguins and loads of fake dog poop to throw around, the session was a lot of fun. The story of Roald Amundsen is not at all straightforward and there were many ethical questions for the students to consider. It was so interesting to get the audience’s perspective on whether Amundsen was justified in lying to his crew and whether there could ever be a scenario under which they themselves would be prepared to eat the sledge dogs!
