Visit to the Bluecoats
Fantastic fun to return to Christ’s Hospital to spend the afternoon with the Bluecoats at their magnificent school in West Sussex. Founded in 1552 by King Edward VI, the school is famous (among other things) for its marching band and distinctive uniform of dark blue frock coat and stockings, which reputedly gained their vivid yellow colour by being soaked in urine to keep away the rats during the Great Plague. No longer the case! Huge thank you to Laura Kidner of Christ’s Hospital for organising a brilliant day, and Sue Martin and Tim Smith, my booking agents for handling logistics.
